The Return of Prince

First we get a brand new song from David Bowie, and now a new track from His Royal Badness, Prince. It’s called “Screwdriver.” You can check it out at his new website here. Prince is also featured on the cover of the latest edition of Billboard. A full album shouldn’t be far behind, which begs the question. What are your favorite Prince albums?

Here’s my current Top Five:

1. Purple Rain

2. Parade

3. Sign O’ the Times

4. 1999

5. Around the World in a Day

Nice picks, Bruce! I’m trying to give his 90s material more of a chance (especially since I always beg people to do the same with Michael’s 90s work). I really like some tracks on Diamonds and Pearls and The Gold Experience, but still love his 80s work much more.

I think what helped me is I never stopped listening to Prince so I have personal memories and emotions tied up with each album. I’d agree that overall, his best material was earlier, but there is so much stellar work that came after. I’d rate later songs like “The Morning Papers,” “Love,” “Chelsea Rodgers,” “The Love We Make,” “The Question of U” and “Crystal Ball” among his very best material.

Prince has created such an enormous body of work that it can be daunting sifting through it all for the first time. Even starting with the 90’s and going forward that’s over 20 albums!!!

I kind of envy you discovering it all for the first time.
