What I’m Listening To: Trespassing (Adam Lambert)

Really enjoying this album, especially the dance tracks. It feels like a hybrid of Prince, Timberlake and 80s-era Queen. Much more consistent and confident than his first album. My Top 5 thus far:

1. Trespassing (“Another One Bites the Dust” revived; lots of attitude; great opening statement)

2. Shady (70s era-funk meets New Jack Swing = awesome)

3. Pop That Lock (could be a big club hit — I can hear MJ singing this song, especially those clipped, percussive lines in the chorus)

4. Kickin’ In (really cool, creative sound — this may be my favorite right now; Pharrell Williams/Adam Lambert turned out to be a great match)

5. Outlaws of Love (poignant, relevant ballad in the wake of continued gay marriage discrimination; my favorite Lambert ballad, though, is still the haunting, underrated “Broken Open“)

Honorable Mention: Cuckoo, Underneath, Broken English

    Prince, Timberlake and 80s-era Queen

Yes – and all wrapped up in contemporary beats and Adam Lambert POV and swagger! Love every song in your top 5 but also just as keen on the playful Cuckoo, the darker-sexier Chokehold, the innovative Broken English and the naked emotion of Underneath. Yes, I’m a huge glambert, but I couldn’t be happier with this album.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I love hearing what non crazy-obsessives are thinking!

As I tweeted earlier Adam Lambert’s album “Trespassing” is insanely amazing. The 5 tracks you list above are also my favorites in addition to Underneath, Cuckoo, Chokehold, Broken English, bonus tracks Runnin’ and Nirvana. Hmmm that’s almost all of them. I’m liking Norah Jones and Bonnie Rait’s new albums. Might check out John Mayer and Neil Young. I’m not really into most top 40 Pop. Adam Lambert, however, is a POP, FUNK, ROCK AND BEYOND HYBRID. VERY NEW AND DIFFERENT. EXCITING.

Finally, another person that likes Pop That Lock! I love it, it reminds me so much of Digital Glitter Adam, pre-Idol. He really lets loose on that track, like he did on the dance tracks he did back when he was working at the Zodiac and in Wicked.
I also love Chokehold, Broken English and Take Back (my former marriage in song). Pop for people with brains – like Adam himself. But I live in Shady, made a house out of it.

Thank you Mr. Vogel for the nice article. I LOVE Lambert’s new album. Purchased the Deluxe CD and must say I can’t get enough of the song Runnin, then Shady. Then Trespassing, Cuckoo, Outlaws of Love, Pop that Lock, Chokehold, Take Back… well you get the idea. Not a one I skip past – listen to them all. Bravo Adam!

Love the whole album, but Runnin, Shady, & Nirvana are my favorites!
Shady needs to be a single!!

Great review…I agree with your favs, except….Upon many listens, they all are fantastic! Seriously, not one throw away in the bunch! I think the 2 Adam/Pharrell tracks are probably the best, but I love me some Shady – Nile Rodgers and Sam Sparro! I have Shady on repeat! The album should win ‘Album of the Year’ at Grammy time….except for politics…..and Trespassing should be Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Adam should also get Vocal Performance of the Year for Anything! Best singer in the world today…Sorry Adele, but you’ll have to take 2nd in my heart. Thanks for this great review. I think you will have more favorites upon repeat listens. : )

Thanks for telling people about how amazing and fresh Trespassing is. I completely agree with everything you said, and would add that the first bonus track on the deluxe edition, Runnin’ is also an amazing piece of ear candy. Get these songs on the radio now!

Pop That Lock is major for me, it’s just my jam but gotta tell you, there isn’t one song I skip on this album! A job well done by Adam Lambert.

I think we’re pretty much on the same page with our likes although I am very partial to Underneath and Broken English. Trespassing is a great album and Adam Lambert is finally getting the recognition he so deserves. What a major talent he is…now and into the future. Thank you for your nice review. Enjoy the music!
